Basics
DOJO – Place for studying Aikido / other martial arts
SENSEI – Teacher / Instructor
KEIKOGI – Practice uniform
OBI – Belt
HAKAMA – Wide, pleated trousers
O-SENSEI – The founder of Aikido: Morihei Ueshiba
KAMIZA / SHOMEN – Front of dojo (usually with a picture of O-Sensei)
Etiquette
ONEGAI SHIMASU – “Please teach me” (said at the beginning of practice)
DOMO ARIGATO GOZAIMASHITA – “Thank you” (said at end of practice)
REI – Instruction given to bow
DOZO – “Please” / “Go ahead”
Practice
TORI – Person executing the technique
UKE – Person receiving the technique
TACHI-WAZA – Standing technique
SUWARI-WAZA – Sitting technique
HANMI – Basic stance (standing with feet one behind and at right angle)
AI-HANMI – Opposite side stance to partner
GYAKU-HANMI – Same side stance to partner
SEIZA – Kneeling with top of feet flat on the floor
KIZA – Kneeling with toes tucked under
Body Movement (TAI SABAKI)
IRIMI – Entering movement TENKAN – Turning movement
OMOTE – Front of partner URA – Rear of partner
UKEMI – Receiving technique SHIKKO – Knee walking
